- TELEGRAM from the Governor of Hong Kong to the Secretary
of State for the Colonies.
Dated 7th April 1927.
(Received Colonial Office 9.55.a.m. 7th April,1927.
My telegram of 25th March. Trade situation. Piece Goods market generally healthier old stock having been taken up and new arrivals passing readily into consumption. Demand for fancy goods provisions and hard-ware quite strong amd considerable forward business done in many lines. Coasting Trade on the whole satisfactory but seamen's Union is continually seeking occasion for calling a general strike on river
steamships. A minor crisis involving one British
vessel has been tided over and it is believed that
both the Canton Authorities and a section of the Union
are against a general strike for the moment.
Repercussions of Nanking and Shanghai situations may
at any time change this. Amoy General harbour strike organised by Seamen's Union is reported in progress also strike of postal employees, shipping companied are refusing cargo and mails for this port.
